How to Enable Advanced Data Protection for iCloud (E2E)

By ··5 min read

Advanced Data Protection (ADP) encrypts iCloud backups, Photos, Notes, and most iCloud data end-to-end. Only you can access it — not even Apple. Enable: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection > turn on.

What ADP Encrypts

Without ADP: iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and other data is encrypted but Apple holds the keys (Apple-encrypted). Apple can provide data to law enforcement with a legal order.

With ADP enabled: 23 iCloud data categories become end-to-end encrypted, including iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, Reminders, Voice Memos, Safari History, and iCloud Drive. Apple cannot access these even with a legal order.

Not covered by ADP: iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar remain standard encrypted (Apple can access). These categories require third-party servers for cross-platform compatibility.

Setup Requirements

You must set up a recovery method first: either a Recovery Contact (trusted Apple ID) or a Recovery Key (28-character code). If you lose access to your device and cannot recover via these methods, your data is unrecoverable. Apple cannot help.

Store your Recovery Key securely (print and store offline, or save to a password manager).

Enable Steps

Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection > turn on. Follow prompts to set up recovery contact or key. Takes a few minutes to enable.

For Note App Users

With ADP enabled: Apple Notes in iCloud becomes end-to-end encrypted. Even if iCloud is breached or Apple receives a government request, your notes remain unreadable without your device key.

Nemos uses iCloud sync for backup. With ADP enabled, Nemos data in iCloud backup is end-to-end encrypted. For maximum privacy: enable ADP + disable Nemos iCloud sync (Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Nemos > off) to keep all Nemos data device-only.
