Nemos for Researchers — Private Research Library with Offline Full-Text Search

Nemos is a free research organization app for academics, PhD students, and independent researchers. It complements Zotero (for citations) by handling everything Zotero doesn't: voice memos of field observations, screenshots of data visualizations, PDFs of papers with full-text indexing, whiteboard photos from lab meetings, and clipped web articles. All content is processed on-device using Apple's Foundation Models API, which means your research materials never leave your iPhone — critical for sensitive subjects, qualitative interview data, or work under NDA.

Full offline mode means every feature works in field locations without internet: remote field sites, archives, libraries, conferences in rooms without Wi-Fi. Record an interview, get an on-device transcript, search for any quote across all your interview transcripts simultaneously. For the privacy architecture, see the private note app page. For offline use specifically, see the offline note app page. For PDF research papers, see the iPhone PDF organizer page.

Sound familiar?

If you've felt any of these frustrations, you're not alone. Academic researchers, PhD students, and independent scholars deal with this every day.

1

Your literature review materials are scattered across Zotero, Google Drive, email, browser bookmarks, and a dozen other apps — finding that one study takes forever.

2

You record insights during fieldwork or lab sessions but never transcribe them, so those voice memos become a graveyard of lost ideas.

3

You screenshot key figures, charts, and passages from papers but they disappear into your camera roll, impossible to find when writing.

4

Switching between your reference manager, note app, and file system breaks your research flow and wastes time you should spend thinking.

Here's how Nemos helps

Nemos was built to solve exactly these problems — automatically.

Save papers, web articles, notes, and recordings in one library. Search across all your research materials at once — Nemos finds the passage, not just the file.

Record field observations or conference talks and get automatic transcriptions. Every word becomes searchable text you can reference in your writing.

Screenshots of figures, charts, and key passages are auto-named with OCR. Search for a term and find the exact chart from that paper you read last month.

On-device AI creates Smart Spaces that cluster your materials by research topic. Your literature review organizes itself as you save relevant sources.

Features that matter for academic researchers

Voice Memo Transcription

Record research observations, interviews, or conference presentations. Nemos transcribes them and makes every word searchable for your writing.

PDF Full-Text Search

Save research papers and search across all of them simultaneously. Find specific passages, citations, or data across your entire library in seconds.

Smart Spaces for Literature

Save sources and Nemos auto-groups them by topic. Your "Neural Network Architectures" cluster grows as you add related papers, links, and notes.

Screenshot OCR

Screenshot key figures, tables, or passages from papers. Nemos reads the content and makes it searchable — find that bar chart by topic, not by filename.

Complete Privacy

All AI processing happens on-device. Your unpublished research, interview data, and confidential notes never leave your device — critical for IRB compliance.

Cross-Device Sync

Save on your iPhone in the field, review on your iPad at your desk. iCloud sync keeps everything current across all your Apple devices.

"I have 200+ interview recordings from two years of fieldwork. Némos transcribes them on-device — no server upload, IRB-compliant — and I can search for any phrase a participant said. That single feature is easily a year of work I don't have to do."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nemos replace my reference manager (Zotero, Mendeley)?+
Nemos complements your reference manager rather than replacing it. Use Zotero for citation management and bibliographies. Use Nemos as your personal research brain — the place where you save screenshots of key findings, record voice notes about insights, clip web articles, and keep everything searchable in one library.
Is my research data private? I work with sensitive interview data.+
Yes, completely. All AI processing in Nemos happens on-device using Apple's Foundation Models. Your data is never sent to external servers, never used for training, and never accessible to anyone but you. Data syncs via your personal iCloud account with end-to-end encryption.
Can I search inside voice recordings?+
Yes. When you record a voice memo in Nemos, it's automatically transcribed on your device. The full transcript becomes searchable text, so you can find any word or phrase spoken in any of your recordings. You can also browse transcripts while listening.
How does Nemos handle PDFs and academic papers?+
Save PDFs directly or via the browser extension. Nemos indexes the full text of each PDF so you can search across all your papers simultaneously. It also auto-extracts the title and key metadata. Pair this with screenshots of key figures for a complete research reference system.
Does Nemos work on iPad for reading and annotating?+
Yes. Nemos has a native iPad app with a full-screen reader for PDFs and documents. You can save highlights, take notes alongside your reading, and search across all your annotations. Split-screen on iPad lets you read a paper on one side and take notes in Nemos on the other.
