How to Check Which Apps Have Microphone Access on iPhone

By ··5 min read

Check which apps have microphone access: Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Every app listed here has requested and been granted microphone access at some point.

Reading the Microphone Permissions List

Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone shows every app with microphone access. Each entry shows the current permission state: "While Using" (only when the app is active), "Never" (denied), or "Ask" (prompts each time).

Green mic indicator in the status bar means an app is currently using the microphone. Orange dot (in Control Center top-right area) indicates recent microphone access.

Apps That Legitimately Need Microphone

Voice recording apps: Nemos, Apple Voice Memos, Ferrite. These need microphone access to function.

Communication apps: Phone, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams. Need "While Using" for calls.

Voice assistants: Siri (system-level, not in this list), Google Assistant.

Red Flags

Apps with microphone access that have no obvious reason for it: games, shopping apps, productivity apps that don’t record. If you see an unexpected app, tap it and revoke access.

Apps set to "Always" microphone access (not just "While Using"): rare, but allows background microphone use. No note app should need "Always" microphone access.

Enable App Privacy Report

Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report (enable). After 7 days it shows which apps actually accessed your microphone and when. More actionable than the static permissions list.

Nemos Microphone Access

Nemos uses microphone access for voice memo recording only — when you tap record. The app does not listen in the background. All audio captured is transcribed on-device using Apple Foundation Models and no audio is uploaded.

Why Microphone Privacy Matters for Capture Apps

Every app with microphone access can potentially record audio. Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone shows which apps have been granted access and whether they accessed it recently.

For capture apps: microphone access is expected and legitimate. Nemos requires microphone access for voice memos — this is the core function. The important distinction: with “Transcribe on this device” on, Nemos transcribes audio on-device. Microphone access doesn't imply audio is transmitted to a cloud server; it depends on the app's processing architecture.

Audit regularly: revoke microphone access for any app that has no obvious need for it. Social media apps, games, shopping apps — these often request microphone access for ad targeting or other purposes that aren't essential to the app's value.

For Nemos: microphone access serves a transparent, user-controlled purpose. Audio is transcribed locally and the original audio never leaves the device.
