Permanently Delete iPhone Photos (Not Just iCloud)
By Taha Baalla··5 min read
To permanently delete iPhone photos without iCloud: disable iCloud Photos sync first, delete photos, empty Recently Deleted album. Then re-enable iCloud if needed. If iCloud sync is active when you delete, photos delete from iCloud too.
Option 1: Delete Without iCloud (Most Thorough)
Before deleting: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > toggle off "Sync this iPhone." This pauses iCloud sync for photos. Now delete photos from Photos app > select > delete. Empty Recently Deleted: Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted > Delete All.
Photos are permanently removed from device. iCloud still retains its copy (the photos you deleted locally exist in iCloud until you also delete them from iCloud).
Option 2: Delete from iCloud (All Devices)
If you want photos deleted everywhere: keep iCloud sync on, delete photos normally. The deletion syncs to iCloud and all devices. Recently Deleted in iCloud retains for 30 days before permanent deletion. Delete from Recently Deleted to make permanent immediately.
Ensuring Photos Don’t Exist After Deletion
After deleting + emptying Recently Deleted: check iCloud.com Photos in a browser to confirm deletion. If photos appear there, delete from iCloud.com too.
Privacy Concern: Photo OCR and Nemos
If you saved photos to Nemos (which OCRs and indexes them): deleting from Photos does not delete from Nemos. Delete the corresponding capture in Nemos separately if needed.
Recently Deleted Timing
iPhone: 30-day retention in Recently Deleted by default. iCloud.com: also 30-day retention. After emptying Recently Deleted, the storage is released and recovery is not possible through Apple’s tools.
iCloud Sync Is Bidirectional
Delete from iPhone → iCloud deletes too, and vice versa. This is the expected behavior, but it catches users who think they're freeing local storage by deleting "locally."
The correct approach for local-only deletion: Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Photos → disable "Sync this iPhone." After disabling, photos on this iPhone will no longer sync to iCloud. Deletion is then local-only.
This has implications beyond deletion. For private captures: any photo taken on iPhone with Photos iCloud sync enabled goes to iCloud. For genuinely private documentation — medical, legal, personal — capture directly to Nemos via the Camera inside Nemos. These captures never go to iCloud Photos, store locally in Nemos, and process entirely on-device.
