How to Password-Protect a PDF on iPhone

By ··5 min read

Encrypting a PDF on iPhone with a password: use Adobe Acrobat mobile app, Files app (limited), or a third-party PDF encryption app. iOS does not have native PDF password encryption built into the Files or Preview apps.

Method 1: Adobe Acrobat (Free Tier Available)

Adobe Acrobat mobile app (free with Adobe account, subscription for advanced features) includes PDF password encryption. Open a PDF in Acrobat > tap the three-dot menu > Protect PDF > Set Password. Creates a password-protected version of the PDF.

Free tier limitation: Adobe Acrobat free allows limited operations. PDF protection may require a paid plan ($19.99/month for Acrobat Standard).

Method 2: PDF Expert by Readdle ($4.99/month)

PDF Expert supports PDF password encryption directly on iPhone. Open PDF > Document > Encrypt > set password. Creates encrypted PDF that requires the password to open. $4.99/month subscription or one-time purchase option.

Method 3: Mac (Then Transfer to iPhone)

On Mac: open PDF in Preview > File > Export as PDF > Security: enable encryption, set password. Transfer the encrypted PDF to iPhone via AirDrop or iCloud Drive.

This is the lowest-friction path if you have a Mac.

Encrypted PDF in Nemos

Nemos can store and organize PDFs. If you save a password-protected PDF to Nemos, Nemos cannot OCR the encrypted content (OCR happens on-device, but encryption blocks text extraction). Store unencrypted PDFs in Nemos for search, and keep sensitive encrypted PDFs in Files or Password Manager (1Password, Bitwarden).

Secure Document Capture Without Encryption

PDF encryption on iPhone protects a specific file with a password. It doesn't protect the underlying document management problem: important PDFs scattered across Files, Mail, Messages, and Downloads with no organization or searchability.

Nemos handles the organization layer. Contracts, medical records, financial documents — share any PDF to Nemos from any app. Now it's in a searchable library with context. Search "insurance policy" or "lease agreement" and find it without remembering which folder or email thread it was in.

For sensitive documents: Nemos keeps documents in your own iCloud, not on Nemos servers. This provides a different type of privacy protection than password encryption — documents that never leave your device can't be intercepted in transit or accessed via compromised cloud accounts.
