How to Batch-Rename Files on iPhone (No App)

Batch renaming files on iPhone: use the Files app with multi-select, or use Shortcuts automation for custom renaming. The native Files app allows renaming multiple files at once in iOS 17+.

Files App Method (iOS 17+)

• Open Files app.
• Navigate to the folder containing the files.
• Tap the three-dot menu (top right) > Select.
• Tap each file you want to rename (checkmarks appear).
• Tap the three-dot menu again > Rename.
• Enter the base name. iOS adds sequential numbers automatically (filename, filename 2, filename 3, etc.).

Limitations: only sequential numbering, not custom patterns. No date insertion or regex patterns.

Shortcuts Method (Custom Renaming)

For more control: Apple Shortcuts + Files actions. Create a Shortcut that: receives a list of files, loops through each file, applies a naming formula (date + original name, custom prefix, etc.), and renames using the Rename File action.

Example shortcut formula for note exports: "2026-06-02 - [original filename]". This is useful for organizing exported PDFs or screenshots by date.

Third-Party Apps

Toolbox for iPhone Files: file manager with batch rename capability including regex patterns, date insertion, and preview. More capable than native Files for complex rename operations.

For Screenshot Organization Specifically

Why Files on iPhone Stay Unorganized

iPhone Files app supports renaming (long-press → Rename) but no batch rename. Adding multiple files with generic names (document-1.pdf, IMG_4532.jpg) is the normal state. Finding them later requires visual browsing.

The workaround: rename immediately on save. Discipline beats batch processing.
