How to Print from iPhone Without AirPrint

By ··5 min read

Printing from iPhone without AirPrint: use a USB-connected printer via a Lightning/USB-C to USB adapter, install the printer’s iOS app, use a print-to-PDF workflow, or use an email-to-print service.

Method 1: Printer’s iOS App

Most major printer manufacturers have iPhone apps: HP Smart (free), Epson iPrint (free), Brother iPrint&Scan (free), Canon PRINT. These apps connect via Wi-Fi to the printer even without AirPrint support. Install the app, add your printer, print from within the app.

Works for: HP, Epson, Canon, Brother printers without native AirPrint.

Method 2: AirPrint (For Supported Printers)

Settings > AirPrint should auto-detect compatible printers on the same Wi-Fi network. Most printers sold after 2014 support AirPrint. Tap Share > Print in any app.

Method 3: Print to PDF

Any app > Share > Print. In the print dialog, pinch outward on the preview to save as PDF. Stores the PDF in Files app. Send to someone with AirPrint access or transfer to a computer for printing.

Method 4: Email to Printer

Some office printers accept email-to-print (Epson Email Print, HP ePrint). Each printer has a unique email address. Send the document as an email attachment to print remotely.

For Nemos Content

Nemos does not have a built-in print function. To print a capture: share the voice memo transcript or screenshot to Notes > print from Notes, or export as PDF from Nemos and print from Files app.

The Real Problem With iPhone Printing

AirPrint works for compatible printers on the same network. The failure cases: office printers (usually enterprise, not consumer), printers on different network segments, printing from coffee shops or hotels.

Third-party printer apps (Printer Pro, Printopia) bridge this gap. Most support PDF export as a universal fallback — export any document from any app as PDF, then email or transfer to a computer for printing.

The workflow most professionals actually use: save to PDF, share via email. The iPhone is rarely the best device for printing. What matters more is document organization before and after printing.

Nemos captures returned documents: photograph the signed contract, the annotated report, or the marked-up draft. Timestamp and searchability beats a physical filing system for documents you need to reference but not store.

Native iOS steps are offline-first. Third-party app behavior depends on the app — any cloud dependency is flagged explicitly.
