How to Clear iPhone Cache Without Losing Your Data
By Taha Baalla··5 min read
Clearing iPhone cache without deleting data: Safari cache (Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data), app caches via offloading (Settings > iPhone Storage > offload then re-install), and unused file cleanup.
Safari Cache
Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data: removes browsing history, cookies, and website cache. Does not delete saved passwords (stored in iCloud Keychain) or bookmarks.
For Safari speed improvement without deleting history: Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data. Removes only site storage, not browsing history.
App Caches via Offloading
Settings > General > iPhone Storage > tap an app > Offload App: removes the app’s code but keeps documents and data. Reinstalling downloads fresh app code. This clears cached files within the app without deleting your data.
Most useful for: large apps that have grown cache over time (streaming apps, photo editors, heavy games).
iMessage Cache
iMessage stores attachments (photos, videos, files sent in messages). Settings > Messages > Keep Messages: change from "Forever" to 1 year or 30 days. Automatically removes old message attachments while keeping the text.
What iPhone Cache-Clearing Does NOT Do
Deleting iPhone cache does not speed up the CPU or significantly improve overall performance. Most perceived speed benefits come from offloading bloated apps, freeing storage space (keeping 2GB+ free), and restarting the device.
For Nemos
Nemos stores captures locally on-device. There is no separate "cache" to clear — the app data is the content library. If storage is a concern: delete specific captures within Nemos or disable iCloud sync to limit backup size.
Cache vs Data: What's Actually Accumulating
iPhone cache is app-specific temporary data: web page components, image thumbnails, API response caches. "Cache" in most contexts means safe to delete. User data (photos, notes, voice memos, documents) is different — this is never automatically cleared and requires manual deletion.
Apps don't expose cache clearing directly in iOS (unlike Android). The iOS method: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → tap an app → "Offload App" removes the app binary but preserves user data. Reinstalling re-downloads the app and starts with a clean cache.
For capture apps like Nemos: offloading preserves all your captured content (notes, voice memos, screenshots). The captures are user data, not cache. Cache in this context is interface state and thumbnail previews — reinstalling Nemos doesn't delete your second brain.

Native iOS steps are offline-first. Third-party app behavior depends on the app — any cloud dependency is flagged explicitly.
