iPhone 17 Pro Action Button — Best Shortcuts for Capture

By ··5 min read

iPhone 17 Pro ships with the same Action Button as iPhone 16 and 15 Pro. By default it triggers Mute/Unmute but can be assigned to any Shortcut action. Best note-taking uses: start a voice memo in Nemos, open Apple Notes directly, run a specific Shortcut.

Setting Up the Action Button for Note-Taking

Settings > Action Button > Shortcut > choose your shortcut or create a new one.

For Nemos voice recording: Install Nemos, create a Shortcut called "Start Nemos Recording" that opens Nemos and passes a "record" intent. Assign this Shortcut to the Action Button. Press the button while phone is locked to start recording immediately.

For Apple Notes: Settings > Action Button > Notes > Quick Note. Creates a new note instantly from any context.

Most Useful Note-Taking Shortcuts

Open a specific app (Nemos, Bear, Apple Notes): fastest way to get to your primary capture tool. One press from the locked screen.

Create a new note with today’s date and time as the title: useful for daily journaling or meeting notes. Shortcut: "New Note > Title: [Current Date/Time]".

Start audio recording: Shortcut that opens Nemos or Apple Voice Memos and immediately begins recording. Fastest capture from lock screen.

Focus mode toggle: switch between work and personal focus mode, which surfaces different notification sets. Useful for context-switching between workflows.

Run a Siri Shortcut for structured input: prompt yourself for a specific type of capture (idea, task, meeting note) and route to the right app based on response.

Action Button Limitations

The Action Button triggers a single action. You cannot have a long-press vs short-press differentiation without a third-party utility. It cannot trigger different actions based on app context. The best approach is to set it to your single most common capture action.

iPhone 17 Pro vs 16 Pro Action Button

The hardware is identical. The difference is software improvements in iOS 26 that enable more Shortcuts actions and better background app launching. iPhone 17 Pro users running iOS 26 get improved reliability for third-party app Shortcuts.
