How to Back Up Your iPhone Without iCloud in 2026

Backing up iPhone without iCloud: use Finder on Mac (wired USB backup), iTunes on Windows, or back up specific apps individually. iCloud is not required for iPhone backup.
Finder Backup (Mac, Best Method)
Connect iPhone to Mac via USB-C or Lightning cable. Open Finder (not iTunes). Click your iPhone in the left sidebar. Click "Back Up Now." Choose "Encrypt local backup" to include passwords and Health data.
Finder backups are stored on your Mac and are complete device backups (apps, settings, photos, messages). No iCloud account or subscription required.
iTunes Backup (Windows)
Install iTunes on Windows. Connect iPhone via USB. Click the iPhone icon in iTunes > Back Up Now. Same options as Mac Finder.
Individual App Export
Most apps have their own export: Voice Memos (share recordings), Notes (export to PDF or text), Photos (export to external drive or Windows Photos). This is not a full backup but covers critical data.
What iCloud Backup Provides That Local Backup Does Not
iCloud backups happen automatically when plugged in, on Wi-Fi, and locked. Local backups require manual cable connection. If your phone is lost or stolen before a local backup: recent data is gone. Consider: local backup weekly + minimal iCloud for automatic daily incremental.
Nemos Backup
Nemos content is backed up in any full iPhone backup (local or iCloud). For additional protection: export specific Smart Space content via share sheet to Files or cloud storage.
What Local Backup Misses
iTunes/Finder backup covers app data, settings, and media. It does not capture the thinking and context that lives in your head when you made decisions. That context disappears when you restore a device.
Nemos addresses this at the knowledge layer. Your capture history — voice memos, screenshots with annotations, saved articles — represents documented thinking. This is backed up wherever Nemos stores data (local device + optional cloud sync).
For the paranoid: Nemos data can be exported. This gives you a format-portable backup of your second brain separate from the iOS system backup. If you ever switch to Android or move off the Apple ecosystem, your captured knowledge comes with you — it's not locked inside iOS.

Native iOS steps are offline-first. Third-party app behavior depends on the app — any cloud dependency is flagged explicitly.
