iPhone Voice Memo Quality Settings (Compressed vs Lossless)

By ··5 min read

Quality Settings Impact on Transcription

Voice Memos on iPhone: Settings → Voice Memos → Audio Quality → Compressed or Lossless. Compressed (AAC at lower bitrate) saves storage. Lossless (ALAC) preserves full audio quality.

For transcription: compressed audio is sufficient. Transcription accuracy depends more on speech clarity and background noise than on audio bitrate. The speech recognition models are trained on compressed audio formats. Lossless provides no transcription benefit.

For archival recordings (legal proceedings, oral histories, musical performances): lossless is worth the storage cost. For everyday voice memos — meeting notes, ideas, reminders — compressed is indistinguishable in transcription quality.

Nemos uses similar on-device compression for voice captures. Transcription quality is determined by your microphone proximity and background noise, not by the audio codec. Speak clearly, minimize background noise — that has far more impact than any quality setting.
