How to Migrate from Pocket to Instapaper (2026)

By ··5 min read

Pocket exported your bookmarks as an HTML file. Instapaper can import this file directly. Steps: (1) Go to instapaper.com/user/import/pocket — sign in, then upload your Pocket HTML export file. (2) Instapaper imports all saved articles as unread items. Archived articles from Pocket are imported separately as archived items in Instapaper.

Why Choose Instapaper After Pocket

Instapaper is the most direct Pocket replacement for users who primarily wanted a clean reading interface. Free tier supports unlimited saves. Premium ($2.99/month) adds full-text search, speed reading, unlimited highlights, and text-to-speech.

Key differences from Pocket: Instapaper has a cleaner, more minimal reading experience. It has been running since 2008 and is one of the most stable read-later services available. It does not have the social features Pocket had (featured articles, trending topics) — it is a personal reading queue only.

Instapaper Import Steps

  • Log in at instapaper.com or create a free account.
  • Go to instapaper.com/user/import/pocket.
  • Click Choose File and select your Pocket HTML export (file name: pocket_export.html or similar).
  • Click Import. Instapaper will process the file.
  • Your articles appear in your Unread queue. Archived Pocket articles appear in the Archive.

Note: Pocket tags do not transfer to Instapaper. Instapaper organizes content with folders instead of tags. You will need to manually re-create folder organization if tags were important to your workflow.

What Instapaper Does Not Do

Instapaper is article-only. It does not save screenshots, voice recordings, PDFs, or other non-article content. If you saved diverse content types in Pocket (images, links to PDFs, social media posts), those will import as links but may not render well.

For users who want to save diverse content types with automatic AI organization alongside read-later articles, Nemos is a broader alternative. Nemos captures articles, screenshots, voice memos, and PDFs in one searchable library.

Frequently asked

Is there a free option that's actually good?↓

Yes — every category has a free option that covers 80% of users. We name it first. Paid apps are recommended only when free apps clearly fall short.

Does this work on older iPhones?↓

Most recommendations work on iPhone 12 and later. AI features (Apple Intelligence) require iPhone 15 Pro or later, but we always provide a non-AI alternative.
