What Happened to Pocket
Pocket was acquired by Mozilla in 2017 and shut down on 8 July 2025, after Firefox usage decline made the business unsustainable. Millions of saved articles, bookmarks, and reading lists were deleted. Users had a 60-day window to export their data.
This is the third major read-later service to shut down in five years (following Instapaper's brief outage in 2020 and Pinboard's maintenance-mode announcement). The pattern reinforces why local-first or on-device storage matters.
