How to Add Background Music to an iPhone Voice Memo

By ··5 min read

Adding music to an iPhone voice memo: not possible within the Voice Memos app. To add background music: import the recording to GarageBand (free, Apple) or iMovie and add music tracks. Or use CapCut (free) for social content.

Method 1: GarageBand

Import voice memo to GarageBand: Open Voice Memos > share the recording > GarageBand. Or open GarageBand > create project > add audio track > import from Files.

In GarageBand: add a second track (tap + > Audio Recorder or Loop Library). Choose music from loops or import your own track. Adjust volumes. Export as audio file: share icon > Audio > choose format (AAC, AIFF).

Method 2: iMovie

iMovie on iPhone: create a new project > import the voice memo as video (audio-only). Add background music via the music library or import a track. Export as video file.

Method 3: CapCut (For Social Content)

CapCut (free): import voice memo audio as a track > add background music. Export as video or audio. Common for podcast audiograms and social audio clips.

What You Cannot Do in Voice Memos

Voice Memos records, trims, and plays back. No music mixing, no effects, no layer tracks. For any multi-track audio: GarageBand.

For Nemos Voice Recordings

Nemos recordings are pure voice transcriptions for personal capture — not for audio production. If you need to produce content from a Nemos recording, export the audio via the share sheet, then import to GarageBand.

When You Need Music Plus Notes Together

The Voice Memos + Music limitation is real: the apps fight over audio routing. Workarounds exist (AudioShare, GarageBand mixing) but they require post-production effort most users won't do consistently.

For the practical case — you want to capture an idea while music is playing — the simplest solution is a text or typing note in Nemos rather than a voice capture. Pause the moment, type the idea quickly, resume playback. Takes 15 seconds.

For musicians: Nemos voice memos without music playing are the right capture tool for melodic ideas, chord progressions verbally described, or lyrics. Build the habit of pausing music to capture musical ideas vocally. The clean capture is worth the 10-second interruption.

Native iOS steps are offline-first. Third-party app behavior depends on the app — any cloud dependency is flagged explicitly.
