iOS 26 Image Playground — Full Walkthrough

By ··5 min read

Image Playground in iOS 26 creates AI-generated images from text descriptions on-device using Apple Intelligence. Access: in Photos or through a Shortcuts action. Requires iPhone 15 Pro or later.

What Image Playground Does

Image Playground generates images in three styles: Animation (cartoon-like), Illustration (hand-drawn), and Sketch (pencil drawing). You describe what you want, the image is generated in seconds on the Neural Engine. No images are sent to any server.

Use cases: custom stickers, visual notes, creative project thumbnails, and fun image messages.

How to Use Image Playground

In Photos: tap + to create a new project > Image Playground.

In Messages: tap the + button in a conversation > Image Playground.

In Notes: when writing a note, tap the arrow icon > Image Playground to insert an image.

Via Shortcuts: "Create Image Playground Image" action allows automation.

Customizing Results

Describe the subject, setting, mood, and style. Examples: "a golden retriever running on a beach at sunset" in Illustration style. "a cup of coffee on a wooden desk" in Sketch style.

Adjust: change style by tapping style options. Generate variations: tap the shuffle icon. Edit description to refine.

Limitations

Image Playground generates stylized illustrations, not photorealistic images. The on-device model is intentionally limited for safety. It does not generate images of real people by name, explicit content, or images designed to mislead.

For photorealistic generation or more complex prompts, external cloud AI tools (Midjourney, DALL-E) offer more capability but require cloud processing.

For Note-Takers

Image Playground integrates with Notes for visual documentation. Generate an illustration to represent an idea, paste it into your note for visual anchoring. Combined with Nemos’ screenshot OCR, generated images can be captured and organized alongside text notes.
