How to Get AI Email Summaries in iOS 26 Mail

By ··5 min read

Apple Intelligence Mail Summary in iOS 18 and iOS 26 automatically summarizes email threads and highlights priority messages. Enable: Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > turn on Apple Intelligence. Mail summaries appear automatically if your device qualifies (iPhone 15 Pro or later).

What Mail Summary Does

Apple Intelligence reads email content on-device and generates summaries that appear below the sender name in your Mail inbox. Long threads are condensed to a single sentence. Priority messages (time-sensitive content) are surfaced at the top of your inbox automatically.

Everything is processed on-device using Apple’s Foundation Models API. Email content is never sent to Apple or any third party.

Requirements

Requires iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model (A17 Pro or A18 chip). iPad with M-series chip. Device language set to English (US or UK) in iOS 18. Device region: United States, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, India in iOS 18. iOS 26 expands language and region support significantly.

Setting Up Mail Priority Notifications

Settings > Mail > Notifications > toggle "Time Sensitive" for Mail. This ensures urgent emails (detected by Apple Intelligence) break through Focus modes.

Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Writing Tools: enable to get AI-powered email composition assistance within Mail.

Using Mail Summary Effectively

Mail summaries in the inbox give you a preview without opening. Summaries for long email chains let you quickly decide if a thread needs immediate attention. Priority inbox surface emails Apple Intelligence identifies as time-sensitive.

For detailed email notes: forward important emails to Nemos (share sheet > Nemos) to add to your knowledge library alongside related documents and notes.

What Apple Intelligence Mail Does Well

Mail summaries in iOS 18 collapse long email threads into a 1-3 sentence summary visible in the inbox without opening the thread. For inbox triage, this is genuinely useful: skip reading emails that don't require action without opening them.

The limitation: summaries are ephemeral. They don't persist as notes, can't be searched, and don't capture the key decision or commitment in the email.

Workflow for email-as-knowledge: read important emails normally, then capture the relevant information in Nemos via Share Sheet. Share the email to Nemos, add a voice note: "Marcus approved the timeline change — needs new contract sent by Friday." The email summary tells you there was a decision; Nemos tells you what the decision was and what you committed to.
