How to Use iPhone as a Second Screen for Mac in 2026

By ··5 min read

Using iPhone as a second screen: not directly possible for Mac without Sidecar (which requires iPad, not iPhone). iPhone can display extended content via AirPlay to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible display. For desk setups: use iPhone as a communication/reference screen.

iPhone as Reference Screen

Position iPhone beside your primary screen as a dedicated reference device. Use apps that benefit from dedicated space: Nemos (reference library while working on Mac), Slack or Messages (communication), Calendar, or music controls.

This is not technically "second screen extension" — iPhone has its own display, not an extension of your Mac’s canvas. But it’s effectively a dedicated reference panel.

AirPlay (iPhone to TV or Monitor)

iPhone > AirPlay > select AirPlay-compatible device. Mirrors your iPhone screen to a larger display. Good for presentations.

For extended desktop from Mac: use a proper external monitor or iPad via Sidecar.

Why Sidecar is iPad-Only

Sidecar uses a low-latency video protocol designed for iPad’s hardware. iPhone hardware and iOS do not include the Sidecar receiver. This is an intentional design separation.

Nemos + Desktop Workflow

Use iPhone as a dedicated Nemos reference panel: search your personal knowledge library on iPhone while working on Mac. This effectively adds context without requiring a second monitor.

Nemos as a Reference Panel

A practical second-screen use case for Nemos: place iPhone in a stand next to your Mac. Keep Nemos open showing your current project’s Smart Space. While working on Mac, glance at iPhone to reference captures — screenshots, voice notes, article clips — without switching windows or apps.

This creates an effective reference panel without any special software. iPhone Mirroring (macOS Sequoia) can also show Nemos on Mac, but having it on a physical second device lets you interact with your capture library independently.

For writing: keep your research in Nemos on iPhone beside your writing app on Mac. Switch reference material by tapping Smart Spaces without interrupting your Mac workflow.

Native iOS steps are offline-first. Third-party app behavior depends on the app — any cloud dependency is flagged explicitly.
