How to Search Inside a PDF on iPhone

By ··5 min read

PDF Search Options on iPhone

Files app has PDF search: open a PDF → tap the search icon → search by text. This searches within the open document only — not across all PDFs on your device.

For cross-document PDF search: Nemos. Any PDF saved to Nemos via Share Sheet is indexed via OCR. Search any term and Nemos returns matching content across all documents in your library, not just the currently open one.

This is the fundamental difference: Files app search requires you to know which PDF contains the information. Nemos search works when you don't know which document to open.

For large research libraries (dozens of academic papers, contract archives, product documentation): this difference is significant. "Find the clause about termination" across 30 contracts requires cross-document search. Nemos provides it; Files app doesn't.

Where Nemos fits

Nemos is a private second brain for iPhone that solves the "I saved it somewhere" problem. Every screenshot, voice memo, PDF, and link you save gets OCR'd, transcribed, and indexed on-device using Apple Foundation Models. Find anything by typing one word. Free. Apple-only. Free on the App Store.
