How to Migrate Mac Stickies to Apple Notes
By Taha Baalla··5 min read
Mac Stickies to Apple Notes migration: copy the content of each Sticky, paste into Apple Notes, then close and optionally delete Stickies. There is no automated import, but the process is fast for most users.
Why Migrate from Stickies
Mac Stickies have been a staple since the 1990s. Reasons to migrate: Stickies don’t sync to iPhone, can’t search across content from iPhone, and don’t participate in Spotlight search on iOS. Apple Notes syncs across all Apple devices via iCloud.
Migration Steps
- Open Stickies app on Mac.
- Open Apple Notes on Mac (for side-by-side working).
- For each Sticky: select all text (Cmd+A), copy (Cmd+C), create a new note in Apple Notes, paste (Cmd+V).
- The Sticky color and font may not transfer, but all text content will.
- After migrating: close the Sticky (click the small X) or keep Stickies open if you want a transition period.
Naming Strategy
Stickies have no titles. When pasting into Apple Notes, the first line of text becomes the note title. Edit the first line to make it a descriptive title before moving on.
Alternative: Keep Both
Some users prefer to keep Stickies for temporary reminders that they explicitly want to discard (shopping lists, temporary phone numbers) while using Apple Notes for permanent content. Stickies remain useful as ephemeral desktop notes.
For iPhone Access
After migrating to Apple Notes, all content is available on iPhone via the Notes app, searchable via Spotlight, and accessible to Siri. Nemos can receive any note via the share sheet if you want it in a searchable knowledge library alongside screenshots and voice memos.
What Stickies Actually Is
Mac Stickies is ambient memory — notes visible on your desktop without opening an app. That's their value: peripheral vision for things you need to remember today. The content is usually ephemeral: passwords to reset, tasks for this meeting, information to copy somewhere.
The migration problem: most Stickies content isn't worth migrating. It's operational, time-sensitive scratchpad material. Before migrating, delete anything that's resolved, outdated, or that you'd never look up again.
What's worth migrating to Apple Notes: reference material you' 've been storing long-term in Stickies, frequently-used text snippets, recurring information you access regularly.
For mobile access to this material: once it's in Apple Notes, it syncs to iPhone. For mobile capture that flows back to Mac: Nemos on iPhone syncs to Nemos on Mac. The combination gives you ambient reference (Apple Notes) plus mobile capture (Nemos).
Frequently asked
Is there a free option that's actually good?↓
Yes — every category has a free option that covers 80% of users. We name it first. Paid apps are recommended only when free apps clearly fall short.
Does this work on older iPhones?↓
Most recommendations work on iPhone 12 and later. AI features (Apple Intelligence) require iPhone 15 Pro or later, but we always provide a non-AI alternative.
