Nemos Lock Screen Widget iPhone: Capture Notes in One Tap

Set up the Nemos lock screen widget on iPhone for instant note capture. Step-by-step iOS 16+ setup guide, Focus Mode integration, and StandBy mode tips.

The difference between a note-taking habit that sticks and one that does not is often just friction. If opening your notes app takes four steps, you lose thoughts during those four steps. If it takes one tap from the Lock Screen, you capture almost everything.

iOS widgets make this possible. Nemos supports Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets that give you instant access to your notes system from anywhere on your phone.

Why Lock Screen Widgets Matter for Note-Taking

The iPhone Lock Screen is the first thing you see when you pick up your phone. For most people, that means:

  • You are picking up your phone for a reason
  • You have not yet been distracted by notifications or other apps
  • Your intent is still clear

If your note-taking app is on the Lock Screen, that intent can be captured before anything else pulls your attention.

The time between "I should note this" and "I am now in Nemos writing the note" matters. Lock Screen widgets compress this to under two seconds.

Setting Up Nemos on the Lock Screen

iOS 16+ required for Lock Screen widgets.

  1. Long-press the Lock Screen to enter customisation mode
  2. Tap the widget area below the clock (or the time itself for the inline widget)
  3. Tap the "+" button to add a widget
  4. Scroll to find Nemos or search for it
  5. Select your preferred widget size and position
  6. Tap "Done"

Recommended placement: bottom widget row, left or centre position — the most natural thumb reach for quick taps.

Widget size options: - Small: shows the app icon, one tap opens Nemos directly - Rectangular: may show recent note preview alongside the tap target (where supported)

Setting Up Nemos on the Home Screen

Widget on the Home Screen is visible between every app interaction:

  1. Long-press the Home Screen
  2. Tap the "+" in the top corner
  3. Find Nemos in the widget browser
  4. Choose size: small (2x2), medium (2x4), or large (4x4)
  5. Drag to a prominent position — top row or first available position
  6. Tap "Done"

Best position: top-left of your primary Home Screen page. The position your thumb reaches first.

Lock Screen Widget vs Home Screen Widget: Which to Use

Use both. They serve different moments:

Lock Screen widget — fastest access, before you even unlock: - Perfect for capture when your hands are full and you need one fast tap - Good for when your phone is lying on a table — you can note an idea without fully picking it up - Ideal for recurring capture habit triggers: every coffee, every commute, every walk

Home Screen widget — always visible when using your phone: - A constant visual reminder that Nemos exists - Useful when you finish a task or switch apps and notice you want to capture something - Better for browsing your recent notes without opening the app fully

Focus Modes and Nemos Widgets

iOS Focus modes can show different Lock Screens. If you have a Work Focus, Personal Focus, or Reading Focus:

  • Create a dedicated Lock Screen for each focus with Nemos prominently placed
  • During Work Focus, your notes widget opens directly to your work notes folder
  • During Personal Focus, it opens to your personal capture

This customisation takes five minutes to set up and ensures notes are always one tap away regardless of which Focus mode is active.

The StandBy Mode Widget (iPhone 15 / iOS 17+)

StandBy mode activates when your iPhone is on its side, plugged in, on a surface. It is the ambient display mode useful on a bedside table or desk.

Add Nemos as a StandBy widget:

  1. While in StandBy mode, long-press the screen
  2. Swipe to find the widget column
  3. Add Nemos

This means your notes app is visible and tappable on your bedside table, desk at work, or kitchen counter — exactly the contexts where ideas arrive and you want to capture immediately.

Shortcuts for Even Faster Access

Combine Lock Screen widgets with Shortcuts for specific capture intents:

"New note" shortcut: creates a shortcut that opens Nemos to a blank new note directly. Add this as a Lock Screen widget action.

Folder-specific shortcut: create a shortcut that opens Nemos directly to your Work folder, Ideas folder, or Inbox. Different Lock Screen widgets for different contexts.

Voice-to-Nemos shortcut: a shortcut triggered by a lock screen widget that opens Nemos with the microphone ready for dictation. Tap once, speak, done.

See Note-Taking Shortcuts on iPhone for the full Shortcuts setup guide.

The One-Tap Capture Habit

The widget setup is worth nothing without the habit.

The habit is simple: whenever you think "I should note this," your thumb moves to the Nemos widget before you think about anything else. No decision required. The widget is where your thumb goes.

For the first week, this will feel deliberate. After two weeks, it becomes automatic. The widget is the trigger; the note is the reward.

The Lock Screen placement is important because it intercepts the impulse before you have unlocked your phone and been distracted by notifications. Most captured thoughts happen in the two seconds between picking up the phone and opening another app. The Lock Screen widget is positioned exactly there.

---

Notification Widgets and Nemos

If you receive a notification on your Lock Screen that triggers an idea, the Nemos widget is right there to capture it before you act on the notification. This is the capture-before-distraction principle applied to the most common attention-capture scenario on a modern smartphone.

FAQ

Does the Lock Screen widget require Face ID unlock? On most devices, tapping a widget on the Lock Screen opens the app and then prompts Face ID. Some devices with specific settings allow interaction without unlock — check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked.

Can I have different widgets for different note folders? Yes, using Shortcuts. Create a shortcut that opens Nemos to a specific folder and add it as a Lock Screen widget action. Multiple shortcuts for different folders can be placed as separate widgets.

Does the widget show a preview of recent notes? This depends on the widget version and iOS version. Where note preview is supported, it shows recent note content in the widget. Where it is not, the widget shows the Nemos icon as the tap target.

Is there an Apple Watch complication too? Yes — see Apple Watch Notes with Nemos for the wrist-based capture setup.

Can I put Nemos in the Dynamic Island? The Dynamic Island shows live activities (navigation, media, timers) but not third-party app widgets in the traditional sense. Lock Screen and Home Screen widget placement is the recommended approach.

Setup takes five minutes. The widget is there every time you pick up your phone. The habit forms itself.
