Why are my iPhone voice memos not saving?

Work out which of three things failed first, because the fixes do not overlap:

• The recording never appeared — capture or save failed.
• It is listed but will not play — the entry exists, the audio does not.
• It is on one device but not another — sync.

## The recording never appeared

Microphone access. Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Voice Memos. If this is off, nothing was ever captured, and no amount of recovery will help.

Free space. Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Recording writes to disk continuously, so a device that is nearly full can fail partway through a long session.

Something else holding the microphone. Only one app records at a time. If you were on a call, in a video meeting, or had another recorder open, Voice Memos may never have started.

## It is listed but will not play

This usually means the entry was created and the audio file was not finished — the app was force-quit, the device restarted mid-recording, or storage ran out while recording.

Try it on another device signed into the same iCloud account. If it plays there, the incomplete copy is local and the recording itself survived.

## It is on one device but not another

Voice Memos syncs through iCloud, which needs both quota and network.

• Settings → [your name] → iCloud, and check available storage. If iCloud is full, new recordings stay on the device and never upload.
• Confirm the toggle is on: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → See All → Voice Memos.
• Leave both devices on Wi-Fi with the app open for a few minutes. Sync is not instant.

If iCloud is full, the honest options are to free space or buy more. Turning sync off is fine, but then whichever device holds the recording is the only copy of it.

## Before you try anything drastic

Do not delete and reinstall the app, and do not sign out of iCloud, while a recording you care about exists only on that device. Both can remove the local copy, and this is the most common way a recoverable problem becomes a permanent one.

Export first: open the recording, tap Share, then Save to Files, and move that file somewhere off the device.

## If a recording matters, do not keep one copy

A missing voice memo hurts because it is usually the only record of something. Anything you could not reconstruct — a doctor's instructions, an interview, an idea you had while driving — deserves a second copy soon after recording: Share → Save to Files, or AirDrop to a computer.

That habit takes seconds and removes this entire category of problem.
