iPhone Back Tap to Open Notes: Set Up Nemos in 60 Seconds
Use iPhone Back Tap to open Nemos instantly — no unlocking or searching required. Step-by-step iOS 14+ setup guide with Shortcuts integration.
You're mid-thought. The idea is evaporating. You reach for your phone, unlock it, swipe through apps, find the note app — and the thought is gone.
Back Tap eliminates that friction entirely. Two taps on the back of your iPhone and Nemos opens. That's it.
What Is Back Tap?
Back Tap is an accessibility feature introduced in iOS 14. It detects taps on the back of your iPhone via the accelerometer and gyroscope and triggers a system action or shortcut.
Two modes: - Double Tap — two quick taps on the back - Triple Tap — three quick taps on the back
You can assign different actions to each, so you could map Double Tap to open Nemos and Triple Tap to a different app entirely.
Works on iPhone 8 and later running iOS 14+.
How to Set Up Back Tap for Nemos
Step 1: Open Settings
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap.
Step 2: Choose Double or Triple Tap
Tap Double Tap (recommended for Nemos — faster, easier to trigger reliably).
Step 3: Select "App" Under "Shortcuts"
Scroll down past the system actions (Screenshot, Mute, Reachability, etc.) to the Shortcuts section. You'll see apps that have Shortcuts actions registered.
If Nemos appears here, tap it directly.
If Nemos doesn't appear in the list, you'll need to create a Shortcut first (see below).
Step 4: Create a Shortcut (If Needed)
- Open the Shortcuts app
- Tap the + button to create a new shortcut
- Tap Add Action and search for "Open App"
- Select Nemos as the app to open
- Tap the shortcut name at the top and rename it to "Open Nemos"
- Tap Done
Now go back to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap → Double Tap and select "Open Nemos" from the Shortcuts list.
Step 5: Test It
Lock your phone (optional — Back Tap works from any screen, including while locked on some configurations). Double-tap the back near the Apple logo.
Nemos opens.
Why Double Tap, Not Triple Tap?
Double Tap is faster and more natural. Triple Tap requires a deliberate three-beat rhythm and is slightly harder to trigger while moving.
Recommended assignment: - Double Tap → Open Nemos (your most frequent action) - Triple Tap → Screenshot or another app
Back Tap vs. Action Button vs. Lock Screen Widget
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, 16, or later, you already have the Action Button — a physical button on the side that can be mapped to an app. That's arguably even faster than Back Tap.
But Back Tap has a distinct advantage: it works on all iPhones from 8 onward. No special hardware required. If you don't have an Action Button, Back Tap is the closest equivalent.
Lock Screen widget (tap to open) is also excellent but requires you to see and interact with the screen. Back Tap is a muscle-memory gesture that works even when you're not looking at the screen — useful in pockets, bags, or while walking.
Does Back Tap Work Through a Case?
Yes, in most cases. The feature uses the accelerometer and gyroscope, not a touch sensor. Thick rubber or heavy-duty cases may require a slightly firmer tap, but the vast majority of cases (including popular brands like OtterBox, Spigen, and Apple's own cases) work fine.
If Back Tap seems unreliable, try adjusting the tap speed or force in your testing. There's no dedicated sensitivity slider, but firm, deliberate taps tend to register more reliably than light flicks.
Accidental Triggers
Some users worry about accidental triggers when putting the phone in a pocket or bag. In practice, the motion signature of a deliberate double-tap is distinct enough from random bumps that false positives are uncommon. The gyroscope helps filter out positional movement.
If you do find accidental triggers, switch to Triple Tap for Nemos — it requires a more deliberate gesture.
Combine Back Tap with Nemos Voice Notes
For maximum speed:
- Back Tap → opens Nemos
- Tap the microphone button in Nemos → start dictating
This two-step sequence captures a voice note in under 3 seconds from any screen. No unlock required if you're already using the phone.
The Habit Math
Reducing friction by even 5–10 seconds per capture event has a compounding effect on how many ideas you actually record. Research on habit formation (B.J. Fogg's Tiny Habits, James Clear's Atomic Habits) consistently shows that the biggest predictor of whether a behavior happens is how many steps it requires.
Back Tap removes 3–4 steps from the note-capture flow. Over a week of active note-taking, that's minutes reclaimed and dozens of ideas preserved that would otherwise have been lost to friction.
FAQ
Does Back Tap drain the battery? No measurable impact. The accelerometer runs continuously on iPhone for motion tracking regardless, and the additional processing for Back Tap detection is negligible.
Can I assign Back Tap to open a specific note in Nemos, not just the app? Yes, via Shortcuts. Create a more complex shortcut that opens Nemos and performs a specific action. Standard Shortcuts limitations apply.
Does Back Tap work when the phone is face-down? Yes. Back Tap detects taps on the back regardless of phone orientation.
My Back Tap isn't responding consistently. What's wrong? Try tapping near the Apple logo (center-back). Tapping near the edges is less reliable. Also ensure your case isn't extremely thick.
Can I disable Back Tap temporarily? Yes. Go back to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap and set Double Tap or Triple Tap to "None."
