Best Note-Taking App for iPhone SE in 2026

iPhone SE users get the same note-taking apps as Pro models. Here's how to set up Back Tap as your Action Button alternative, which apps work best on the compact screen, and why voice capture wins on SE.

The iPhone SE is a deliberate choice: smaller size, lower price, headphone jack (2022 SE), and the familiar Home button. In 2026, a huge installed base of SE users are running iOS 17+ and looking for note-taking apps that match how they actually work.

iPhone SE: What It Means for Note-Taking

The SE lineup differs from Pro models in a few ways that affect note-taking:

No Action Button: SE doesn't have the Action Button. But Back Tap (available since iOS 14) provides a similar one-touch shortcut on any iPhone.

Home Button + Face ID on 2020 SE / Touch ID on 2022 SE: unlock with your finger on the home button, then tap the lock screen widget. Slightly different flow than Face ID models, but the lock screen widget still works.

Smaller screen: the SE's 4.7" screen means less visible keyboard real estate. Voice capture has an even stronger ergonomic argument on SE — your thumbs have less room.

No Dynamic Island, no Always-On: standard lock screen behavior. Lock screen widgets are available via iOS 16+ on both SE models.

Same iOS, same apps: every note-taking app runs identically on SE as on Pro models. No features are withheld.

Top Note-Taking Apps for iPhone SE

1. Némos — Best for Voice Capture on a Small Screen

The SE's compact screen actually makes Némos's voice-first approach more attractive. Less typing, less awkward thumb gymnastics on a 4.7" keyboard.

SE-specific setup: 1. Add Némos widget to lock screen (Settings → Wallpaper → customize lock screen) 2. Configure Back Tap: Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap → Double Tap → Open Némos shortcut

Back Tap works with Touch ID fingerprint login — the physical button is always accessible even on a locked phone.

Voice capture workflow on SE: 1. Double tap back of phone 2. Némos opens 3. Tap microphone, speak 4. Done in 4 seconds from locked

For SE users, this workflow is often faster than Pro users who need to find and press the Action Button.

2. Apple Notes — Best for Deep iOS Integration

Apple Notes works identically on SE as on Pro. Siri integration ("Hey Siri, create a note") works without needing to look at the screen — useful for SE users who often keep the phone in a pocket or bag given the smaller size.

3. Bear — Best for Writers

Bear's compact, clean interface scales well to the SE screen. Markdown typing on a small keyboard is manageable for shorter notes; longer compositions benefit from a Bluetooth keyboard.

4. Notion — Adequate But Heavy

Notion's mobile app is not optimized for small screens. Database views and sidebar navigation feel cramped on the SE. Usable but not ideal — if you use Notion heavily, consider the iPhone 16 or a tablet.

5. Obsidian — Better on Larger Screens

Obsidian's graph view and panel navigation are designed for larger screens. Core note-taking works fine on SE; advanced features feel constrained.

Back Tap: The SE User's Action Button

iPhone SE users don't have an Action Button, but Back Tap (Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap) provides effectively the same functionality:

  • Double Tap → assign any Shortcut
  • Triple Tap → assign any Shortcut

Recommended setup: - Double Tap → Open Némos - Triple Tap → Open Apple Notes (for users who switch between apps)

Back Tap works through most cases, with your finger placed on the back of the phone near the Apple logo. It takes 2-3 days to build the muscle memory.

Voice Typing on SE: Microphone Quality

The iPhone SE 2022 uses the same A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13 Pro, which means on-device speech recognition quality is excellent. Voice transcription accuracy on SE 2022 is comparable to iPhone 14 and 15 models.

iPhone SE 2020 (A13 Bionic) has slightly lower transcription accuracy but remains very good for normal note-taking use cases.

Lock Screen Widgets on SE

Lock screen widgets were introduced with iOS 16. Both SE 2022 and 2020 models support them on iOS 16+.

Setup: 1. Long-press the lock screen 2. Tap "Customize" 3. Add Némos widget to the lock screen widget area 4. Tap to use from locked state (requires Touch ID or passcode to interact with widget content)

Note: on SE with Touch ID (vs. Face ID on Pro models), the authentication flow for lock screen widget interaction requires a thumb press on the Home Button. This adds ~1 second vs. Face ID but remains fast.

SE Size Advantage: One-Handed Note Capture

The SE's compact size enables true one-handed operation. For note-taking in specific contexts, this is an advantage:

  • On the subway, standing, phone in one hand
  • Walking while carrying something
  • In bed, lying on your side

The SE is genuinely more comfortable for one-handed use than larger iPhones. For spontaneous note capture during these contexts, the smaller size wins.

FAQ

Q: Is there any note-taking feature available on Pro models that doesn't work on SE? No note-taking features are withheld from SE. All note apps run identically. The Action Button is a hardware shortcut but Back Tap provides equivalent functionality. The Dynamic Island and Always-On Display don't affect note app functionality.

Q: Does Back Tap work with a case? Depends on the case thickness. Most standard cases work fine with Back Tap. Very thick or rubberized cases may reduce detection reliability. Test with your specific case.

Q: Is voice transcription on SE 2020 accurate enough for note-taking? Yes, for everyday note-taking. SE 2020 (A13 Bionic) transcribes accurately for normal vocabulary and speech. Technical terminology and unusual proper nouns may require correction. SE 2022 (A15) is noticeably better.

Q: Should I get the SE or upgrade to iPhone 16 for better note-taking? If note-taking is the primary driver, the SE is sufficient. The Action Button (iPhone 15 Pro+ and 16) is nice-to-have, not essential — Back Tap provides the same outcome. If you're upgrading for other reasons (camera, screen size), the 16 has advantages; for note-taking alone, SE is excellent.

Q: Does the SE headphone jack matter for note-taking? The SE 2022's headphone jack allows wired earbuds for AirPods-equivalent voice capture without Bluetooth. Any wired headset with a microphone works for voice notes, which is useful if you've left your AirPods behind.
